At about 11am on the 1st July 1916, the 1/5th Bn of the Duke of Wellington’s moved to the “Southern Bluff” near Authuille. I have been unable to establish where this is/was but guessing somewhere on the bank of the Ancre? Can anyone help?

That would it right in the river valley not far from Black Horse Bridge. I will see if I can find a map on which it is named.

Some good maps and details in the General Staff war diaries for 49th Division and X Corps, Roger, but I can’t spot it being named. It might be worth reading the detailed orders and reports on both war diaries as they contain very good location details, and it is just possible you might get a more accurate grid map reference.
