Number 1 Entrenching Battalion 1916

No 1 Entrenching Battalion was formed on the Salient early in 1916 and effectively disbanded in early September that year. The original battalion was almost exclusively formed from the remnants of 1/4th Battalion Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, and they were used en-mass to reinforce 1st Bn QOCH after the tragedy of High Wood 3/9/1916.

I’d be utterly grateful if anybody could tell me that I’m an idiot, and there is a war diary for them in ??? - otherwise ANY references to them during 1916 at all. (As far as I’m aware they only served on the Salient).

Battalion is mentioned in 24th Division war diary of April 1916 in connection with defensive arrangements for GHQ Second Line in the area of Wulverghem.

IX Corps lists battalion as part of its order of battle on 14 August 1916.

Thanks Chris. In the regimental journal (“The 79th News”) they simply “disappear”.

(Is the 24th Div diary the GS one ?).
